Detox, or detoxification, is the removal of potentially toxic substances from the body. Special diets, supplements, herbs, enemas and other methods help remove environmental and dietary toxins from the body. To make your own juice at home, buy an inexpensive juicer with cutting blades and a centrifugal spin. If possible, you want to look for a juicer that operates a lower speeds to avoid heating and thereby damaging nutrients, adding oxygen to the juice and eliminating impact shock to the fruit or vegetable. Otherwise, you can press juice or squeeze juice by hand or using a presser.

If you have been diagnosed as a chronic alcoholic or drug addict, the following recipes might help you restore balance to your internal organs and systems. Please consult with a medical doctor before using any of the recipes to be sure that your body is prepared for the cleansing nature of these juices.

4-5 carrots
3-4 small beets

Only when he got left upper abdominal pain, he went to see a local Dr. Tests results showed 15% fat in liver, livers work as its 60 years old, cholesterol 8, height 1.70cm/72 kg. Following Dr’ advice: daily exercise, losing weight 4 kgs 1kg/month, drinking a glass of green juice, then a glass of warm water when get up in the morning, reducing red, processed meats, avoiding deep fried food. There was no medication given. After 7 weeks, extremely following Dr’ advice, his recent test showed cholesterol 6, losed 3 kgs. His skin looks healthier. Green juice makes of 2 celery stick, 2 handfuls spinach, 2 handfuls kale, few dandelions from backyard, 1/3 winter melon instead of cucumber as he doesn’t like cucumber. He doesn’t drink fruit juice, just small pieces to keep sugar level low, meals with chicken, fish, lettuces mix, broccoli, etc… red meat once a week, definitely no deep fried or processed meats. 4. As someone mentioned above, having the liver tested and then juicing and then retesting is great. I am doing this now due to the fact that at my annual Doctor visit, my liver was “having some issues” per my bloodwork. I know that is because of years of heavy drinking. I am currently juicing daily and eating a clean diet … I go back for bloodwork in February. I’ll let you know.

  6. Hello larrynena. IT would be best to consult with a nutritionist and your prescribing doctor before undergoing any juice fast. Check in with these medical professionals first and ask your questions to them.

  8. Hi Gary. Dizziness, unease and even nausea are predictable outcomes for the carrot-beet juice combination. Many people experience them as the liver is cleaned out. Yes, it’s common to have a beet-colored stool when drinking this juice. It’s simply a sign that your intestines have processed the drink.

  9. just tried the carrott and beet juice and it made me dizzy .. then went to the loo and my stool was watered with beetroot is this common ?? does this mean its flushing all the crap out my body

  10. Hi Penni. I wonder if you can find a used juicer on craigslist for a reasonable price. With juicers, quality is very important. The best kind of juicer is one that PRESSES the nutrients from the plants, rather than cutting into the plant material. And in terms of juice vs. smoothie…I think that vegetables are much easier to drink as juices than to gulp as smoothies. Smoothies tend to be fruit based and full of sugar.

  11. Oh and just for clarification…I am not addicted to drugs or alcohol….I just want to start juicing in addition to being vegan….So what kinds of juices would you recommend…..I don’t want to detox and get into trouble if I try some of the above recipes….Thanks again.

  12. Hi:
I had a Champion juicer but sold it. Now I am looking for a less expensive juicer…..Could you recommend any brands that would be good….I am vegan but feel the need to juice….Is juicing better than making smoothies where you get all of the fiber from the fruits and vegetables? Just wondering….Thanks.

  13. Hi Sara. I attended a weekend open house at the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, FL ( and saw there that the do multiple TYPES of juices over the course of the day. No ONE juice was repeated more than 2-3 times throughout the day. Perhaps you might approach a liver detox the same way, and use a combination of juices. But before trying, perhaps you can consult with a nutritionist at Whole Foods and let us know!

  14. These recipes look great – has anyone tried using these during a 3-day juice cleanse? If so, which would you recommend to do for the 8 ounces per hour? I heard doing 64 ounces a day, 8 an hour is the best way. I’d like to juice myself or order it from a place like Whole Foods.
    Please let me know!

  15. That is such a great point, Michael. And a good starting point for some medical trials. You can search the PubMed database to see any such trials have already been completed.

  16. Has anyone ever compared an analysis of liver enzymes from blood work done before detox juicing to after the detoxifying? This seems to be the only real way to see if the liver functions improved and the enzymes returned to normal levels.

  17. Whole Foods has an unbelievable selection of fresh, unpasteurized juices. I am drinking the Carrot Beet Ginger one as I type, and have a Carrot, Beet, Kale, Wheatgrass in the fridget. They are about $4 each for 16oz so if you’re not a regular juicer, these are a great option.

  18. Hi Carol. I my experience, juicing works best with a well balanced diet. I find also that I like drinking my juices on an empty or hall-full stomach. But that’s just me.

Hi Frikkie. Daily dose and frequency of juicing will really depend upon the person. I’d suggest that you consult with a nutritionist in order to set up a juicing calendar to achieve nutritional goals.

  19. Liver detox juice what is the daily dossise in ml and once a dayor ?and for how long can person carry on? like on dailly basis or once month for a week

    Thanks and Regards

  20. I also find carrot + beet juice to be one of the best detoxifying juices. You wouldn’t believe it, but I actually blogged about the same recipe earlier today before reading this post! What a coincidence LOL! This is a great list of juicing recipes and definitely handy for those interested in detoxing from alcohol or drug abuse.

  21. Hi Mandy. Fresh vegetables are always best. But in a pinch, yes…I suppose that you could used canned beet. And drinking the juice in the can on the side…why not?

  22. I did some work with a Chinese Herbalist a few years ago and did many of the Extreme Liver Cleanses, although he didn’t call them that. They worked very well for me, although I did combine them with other things, such as a fairly clean diet for a few months, lots of juicing, some fasting, kidney cleanses and some other odds and ends. If done correctly these cleanses really work, but it should go without saying that alcohol and other drugs (both legal and illegal) are generally bad news for you liver.

  23. Hi Karen. Thanks for your question. In my personal experience, a “detox” is really based on what’s happening in your body your personal health goals. In other words…What can your body handle? And what are you trying to achieve?

In terms of an exact detox or juicing program, I’ve known some programs that advocate that juicing for detox become a part of your lifestyle, some that say your should juice as needed, and some that are an intense period of juicing (3-5 weeks).

I’d suggest that you schedule a consultation with a nutritionist and make sure that you get a juicing program verified and OK’d by your primary doctor (or specialist) before starting. This way, you can co-create a program that will work for you!

  24. Thank you all for your comments. However, I do not find here even one testimonial about the RESULTS of juicing and detoxing through juicing. Would love to hear the success stories. Anyone out have one?

  25. Healthy eating has really been good for my family and can help people diagnosed with addictions. It’s very satisfying to grow and then prepare your own food.

  26. Juices are very healthy. Thanks for sharing this very informative article. I am starting to drink juice often and would give myself a break from unhealthy stuff I purchase from ordinary vending machines.

  27. its been very interesting to look at all the juices i can take to detox my liver..cant wait to get full on into them….thankyou very much

  28. good luck, drinking drugs you name it etc. i have found that different foods ,that i cook keep my mind on the dish and i dont wonder mentally. this is a game i will be playing the rest of my life, it works for me and many other people i have shared with. the type of food really doesn’t matter as long as it keeps my mind strong, g

  29. Alcohol withdrawal occurs when a person’s body becomes dependant upon alcohol and the consumption of alcohol is discontinued. The intensity and severity of the alcohol withdrawal symptoms due to the discontinuation of alcohol depend upon the frequency and amount of alcohol consumed. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include sweating, rapid pulse, increased hand tremors, insomnia, nausea or vomiting, physical agitation, anxiety, auditory hallucinations, and the possibility of grand mal seizures. These physical and emotional symptoms may be extremely severe depending on the individual’s alcohol abuse history. For this reason alcohol withdrawal should be managed in an alcohol detox program. If a person is alcohol dependent, alcohol withdrawal symptoms will always occur, but an alcohol detox program can greatly minimize alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

  30. Body Detoxification is not the only way to look young and beautiful. Your attitude towards environment should be positive. Your diet and fitness should be properly maintained so that you don’t lose much weight nor gain much weight.

  31. a fresh drink of prune juice is good for digestion, carrot and tomato juice are also good for juicing after a hungover. great article and recipes by the way, ill try this recipes cause i drink to much this is good for detox. bookmarked for future reference.

  32. Hey Chas. I hope that you are still doing well and working on sobriety a year later. I’m just back from a long maternity leave…sorry to have been away for so long. I’ve heard about Champion juicers. This is a really good middle of the road (in terms of pricing) juicer for home. We bit the bullet and bought a Green Start Gold juicer this year. So far, so good. I would suggest that you consult with a doctor and a dietitian before trying any juices in combination with a real detox.

Iquey, I’d suggest that you try the beets a little later after the cold and see what effect they have. I have experienced some abdominal cramping near my liver when I juice beets…and coughing up phlegm when I juice lemons and then add paprika (the Master Cleanse).

  33. Oh yeah.. Beets are powerful alright.
Over the past week and a half i’ve been eating beets and juicing them. They’re smaller ones from the farmers market but they’re still really good. But i’ve been also staring to cough up phlegm, and I don’t know if it’s because i’ve gotten sick or if it’s because they’re working lol.
It’s not like a cold or flu because I can breathe fine, but for sure, every now and then a big wad will just float up.

  34. thank you so muhh for your suggestions.
I was in pain managment for ten yrs., Heavy narcotics! My problem was solved with a full shoulder replacement! OUCH!!!! It was the MOST PAINFUL surgery that exsist on earth, they couldnt give me enough pain meds in the hospital, and of course I have almost total tolerance to all they could with in there legal for in hospital stay, I can take ten percocet double strength on top of 80mil of oxycotin along with a couple other pills. I’m not proud of that fact what so ever, just so you can gauge where I’m at! I’m 53yrs old, on top of that I’m a top name hairdresser in PHX,AZ.
Ive had back fusion, three knee surgeries, three hemeroid surgeries, approx 20 R. shoulder dislocates, Not to mention all the little breaks-knee-elbow-foot. Well thats what I get For loving extreme sports, In ie. skydiving paragliding, ultra light flying and crashing, snow &watersking, paintball, and of coures a couple of illegal activies of which I shall not bring to light.
I’m having a hard time refreshing my mind, cleaning it out to feel like I did 20yrs ago, I know its possible to return to that joy, with faith in God, excersize, and last but as important-correct eating and Juicing. I bought a CHAMPION JIUCER 18yrs ago. I belive that 4-5 yrs of doing the good jiuce that long ago kept me young looking at minus ten yrs easy, but its catching up fast. My CHAMPION is in perfect cond.
I’m having great difficulty transioning from SUBUTEX to sobriaty, cant make it past 4-5-6 days without feeling like I’m walking upstream agianst spring melt comming from the ROCKY MNTS. If you have any super special Idea’s on juicing for this rough time. I’m off the heavy narcotics for three months, head feels much better, spelling still sucks and allways will. thank you-CHAS

  35. If you’re new to juicing, I’d recommend that you start with a juice a day. I like juices in the morning, just after a glass of fresh spring water. One easy way to start is to try straight cucumber juice every morning to get your metabolism going. Then, later, when you’ve become used to taking any of these juices I suggest that you consult with a nutritionist or your doctor to look into a full juice diet for some period of time. Your diet will depend upon what you goals you are trying to meet, so I suggest that you work with a health care professional for a more aggressive juicing program.

  36. I love those recipes i would like to try them. i would like to know how much times a day and how long

    thank you for sharing

  37. Yes, the sugar is sometimes the cause of many a crash or relapse in early recovery. Lucky you…Ben and Jerry’s! That’s a step up from the lollipops and Jolly Ranchers they were handing out in treatment. The orange juices are a good quick fix for sugar. Some of the stronger detox combinations include acidic fruits and oils, to flush the internal organs. I recommend the green drinks, though … for alcohol or sugar addicts. It helps reduce cravings, I’ve found.

  38. Great article. The physical problems associated with chemical addictions are often overlooked in favor of the spiritual/mental. A quicker physical recovery can facilitate overal recovery. I would like to point out that Alcohol in particular is one of the more physically addicting, and dmaging drugs. In fact, a major component of the physical addiction is to the sugar which results from liver oxidation. Cravings can be significantly reduced by adding this sugar back into the diet of the alcohol free individual. All your body knows is that when you put the bottle to your lips, It gets more sugar, and it will ask for it once its gone. Any of the recipes above which contain oranges, which are very high in sugar, will certainly work wonders for a recovering alcoholic. Certainly healthier than the Ben and Jerrys Ice cream I used.

  39. Please know that not everyone who consumes lots of alcohol or drugs at one point in their lives is an addict. Addiction is characterized by a mental and physical compulsion to continue the addictive behavior. Addicts in recovery can benefit from these detoxifying juices, for sure.

  40. Hi, This is Simon. I just want to say people not to go with alcohol and drugs in heavy quantities this will make you suffer in future a lot. So please take care of your health and be safe. It will be happy for you and also for you family.

  41. You’re welcome Monique. As a former barista at a juice bar, I have huge respect for juices and their effects on the body. I’d suggest medical supervision for the more extreme juices with cleanses…as it’s good to watch blood pressure, sugar levels, etc. during a cleanse. Not included is the “Master Cleanse” which is and excellent way to expel phlegm from the body.

  42. These recipes were great! Thank you for sharing these liver detox ideas. I have heard of a few of them before, but your list was all-inclusive. I will share these with some friends. Thanks
