The Detection of Cannabis
Cannabis drug testing includes various different methodologies to determine whether a person has been using marijuana, or not. Cannabis use is highly detectable in urinalysis, hair analysis, as well as saliva tests for days or weeks. What are some factors that influence the detection time of weed?
Detection time depends strongly on a few factors, such as:
- The kind of test used.
- The sensitivity of the test itself.
- A user’s frequency, dosage, last time of use.
- Your individual genetic makeup.

Other factors that influence the detection window for marijuana include your:
- Age
- Body mass
- Food intake / hydration
- Gender
- Liver function
- Metabolic rate
- Sosage / amount taken
- Frequency of administration
Marijuana Test Detection
How long does marijuana stay in your system? Generally, weed can be detected for around a month after last use…but longer if you’re a chronic or high dose users. Here’s how the detection window breaks down by type of test:
Urine: A urine drug test for marijuana will detect marijuana for 3 – 30 days.
Hair: Hair tests are more likely to detect regular than occasional marijuana use. Marijuana is visible for 90 days on a hair test.
Saliva: The sensitivity of saliva tests is not well established in the case of marijuana. But, in most cases, marijuana is only detected for 1 day on a saliva tests.
Blood: Blood tests are a better detector of recent cannabis use, since they measure the active presence of THC in the system between 3 days and 2 weeks.
