All addiction treatment programs have three similar goals in common:

  1. Reducing substance abuse or achieving a substance-free life
  2. Maximizing quality of life
  3. Preventing or reducing the frequency and severity of relapse

However, no single treatment approach is effective for everyone with a drug or alcohol problem. So how do you choose between inpatient or outpatient rehab?

There is no overall advantage for either inpatient treatment or outpatient care. Instead, you must match your personal needs to a treatment setting. You should choose the least restrictive environment that is still safe and effective for you … and then as you demonstrate the capacity and motivation to cooperate with treatment and no longer need a more structured setting or the types of services offered only in that environment (i.e., medical or nursing supervision and room and board), you gain more freedom.

Essentially, most everyone can benefit from treatment delivered in either inpatient or outpatient rehab, although specific subgroups seem to respond optimally to particular environments. Follow our flowchart to learn more about what option is best for you.
