Should I Consider Rehab?

Amphetamines are classified as stimulants and can be extremely addictive if not used as prescribed. When a person abuses amphetamines their body develops a high tolerance for the drugs and creates a desire to use higher and more frequent doses. As a result, high tolerance often leads to addiction.

  • What type of treatment can bring more benefits for you?
  • How much does the treatment cost, and what are the payment options?
  • Where is it located?
  • Is the medical team experienced with amphetamine addiction treatment?

What Is Amphetamine Rehab Like?

There are thousands of rehab centers that currently provide amphetamine addiction treatment in the U.S. So, what’s it like?

Rehab is not a walk in the park, it is hard work. It requires commitment and patience. Your experience will also depend on the type of supports you have and the program you participate in. But you can expect rehab to be a little like continuing education and a little like summer camp, with psychotherapy at the center of treatment activities.

Some recovering amphetamine users have found residential treatment programs the most beneficial because they are in a safe space, surrounded by peers and away from the temptations of social use. Others have found outpatient rehab services better because they can still go to work and find the process less intrusive on their lives. Regardless of what kind of rehab you choose, amphetamine rehab programs will generally consist of the same steps:

  1. Assessment
  2. Detox (if necessary)
  3. Counseling + medication (if necessary)
  4. Support services
  5. Aftercare
  1. Assessment of the problem

Assessment involves an interview (usually less than an hour long) which is used to assess the factors that are related to addiction and make a referral to suitable services. This process can also involve an assessment for financial assistance and can help reduce the cost of rehab treatment and/or drug testing.

  1. Detox

Medical detox can be acute or sub-acute. Acute detox is when you are supervised by a doctor to withdraw from amphetamines using medication and usually involved an inpatient stay of about a week. Sub-acute is when you detox without medication or use medication as an outpatient (prescriptions and no direct support).

  1. Main interventions

Inpatient, or residential, amphetamine rehab provides 24 hour support within a facility. Inpatient rehab requires consecutive overnight stays, so you’ll need to pack enough clothes and personal supplies for about 7 days. You will generally stay in a facility away from the temptations associated with amphetamine abuse and attend group or individual counselling, education programs, social activities. Medical support is provided for inpatient clients, and the stay usually lasts from 28 days to 3 months, or more.

Outpatient amphetamine rehabs provide support to people without the need for 24 hours care. In an outpatient setting, you don’t stay in a facility but attend appointments at a treatment center multiple times per week. This can be delivered in a number of ways depending on your rehab needs. As an outpatient, you may be provided with pharmacological support, medications to help address depression or anxiety. Outpatient rehab for amphetamine addiction is delivered, on average, for about 10 weeks, although you can stay in treatment for months if needed.

  1. Support services

Rehabs can also work a little like social service providers, and refer you to public programs or a social worker. They can connect you with housing after treatment completion, suggest education or vocational training, and generally help you set yourself up for a better chance at a clean life.

  1. Aftercare

Once you have completed a rehab program, it is recommended that you continue with treatment. This could include group counseling, individual counseling, 12 step, or a similar support group like SMART Recovery. Aftercare may also inclue living in a halfway house, changing jobs, or focusing on your recovery. A good amphetamine rehab will help you plan for aftercare and consider your next steps.

What’s The Cost Of Amphetamine Rehab?

The cost of rehab varies from program to program and facility to facility. The cost of rehab can range from almost free to more than $10,000 a month. High end facilities will have a greater range of amenities and programs and the facility will be flashier. But you may end up paying for things you don’t need. In general, plan to pay around $150 per day for outpatient amphetamine rehab, and about $750 for inpatient.

What If I Have Limited Financial Resources?

Recovery from addiction can be costly. However for those who lack the money for treatment, there are ways to manage the cost of rehab. Government funded programs are low or very low cost and some are free. These programs have no bells or whistles but you will get the support you need. Regardless of where you receive rehab treatment, here are some ways to reduce the cost of treatment.

  1. Write off treatment on your taxes

Medical care expenses can be claimed at tax time. This includes payments for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or payments for treatments affecting any structure or function of the body. Medical care expenses include the insurance premiums you paid for policies that cover medical care or for a qualified long-term care insurance policy covering qualified long-term care services. Deductible medical expenses may include but are not limited to:

  • Payments of fees to doctors, dentists, surgeons, chiropractors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and non-traditional medical practitioners
  • Payments for outpatient, inpatient hospital care or nursing home services, including the cost of meals and lodging charged by the hospital or nursing home
  • Payments for outpatient or inpatient treatment at a centre for alcohol or drug addiction, for participation in a smoking-cessation program and for drugs to alleviate nicotine withdrawal that require a prescription
  • Payments for drugs that require a prescription
  • Payments for admission and transportation to a medical conference relating to a chronic disease that you, your spouse, or your dependents have (if the costs are primarily for and essential to necessitated medical care).
  1. Be sure to have health insurance coverage

Having health insurance can make a big difference in the type of care you receive. Coverage for outpatient or inpatient rehab services varies greatly from one provider to another and from one policy to another. Many insurance companies set limits on how many days of treatment will be paid for, or the level of treatment that is covered. Many facilities have intake counselors who can work with you to have your benefits verified.

  1. Ask about a sliding scale out-of-pocket rate

If your insurance company won’t cover rehab, you may be able to qualify for a sliding scale fee based on your income.
